The 2023 Virginia Lottery Teacher Tour!

Catch Up On Our Past Teacher Tours

Check out the 2021 Teacher Tour!

Virginia Lottery Teacher Tour continues with a stop at W.T. Woodson to honor four teachers. Congratulations to Andrea Austin who stepped up to take care of a colleague's students while she was undergoing cancer treatment. In addition to her own students she supported others during this difficult start to 2021 school year. She is one in a million!!! Señora Shapiro teaches Spanish at Woodson she is very kind and flexible and bring extra life to language making class helpful and engaging. Mr. John Nah was nominated by a student. Mr Nah teaches combatting intolerance "the impact this man has had on my high school career, I hope everyone could experience as well. " Mr. Mike Viccora is an enthusiastic AP US History and Law in Action teacher. "APUSH" is widely regarded as one of the most content heavy and difficult AP courses.

We heard how great Hilary Stough, a 5th grade general education teacher at Willow Springs ES, is. Her colleague nominated her on the Virginia Lottery Teacher Tour because Hilary "makes learning fun beginning with greeting each of her students at her classroom door with unique handshakes that they created (that's 22 different handshakes she's memorized!) She does dynamic lessons with mentor texts and scientific tools (did I mention she's the science lead for our whole school?)" Hilary teaches the advanced math class which provides general education students an opportunity to access math a grade level above and she strives to make sure students have the conceptual understandings, not just remembering formulas and steps. As a teammate, she keeps everyone grounded in our planning meetings, sharing lots of great ideas, and providing a varied perspective as both an inclusion and advanced academics teacher, but she is always quick to lighten the mood with her good humor! What Hilary's nominator Christine didn't know is that she was also an honoree on the Teacher Tour.

Ms. Kristin Gomez, orchestra teacher from Hoffman-Boston in Arlington, Virginia is in-tune with her students. From the parent nomination "Miss Gomez is wonderful educator who really loves what she does. She went above and beyond during virtual school the past school year when she asked her student to meet out of school to tune their instruments and played for a little while. This year she is using all possible communication resources to recruit more students to the program. She brings joy, energy, enthusiasm to each of her classes, she has a connection with her students who loves music more because of her (my son's experience)."
